Indian Railways and IRCTC have officially announced that ticket bookings for travel on October 18 will open to the public on August 19 at 8:00 AM. As the festive season approaches, passengers are strongly advised to complete their bookings as soon as the window opens to secure confirmed berths amid the anticipated high demand across the rail network.
Key updates for passengers include:
- Booking Opening Date: August 19 at 8:00 AM for October 18 travel.
- Advance Reservation Period: Reduced to 60 days for most train services.
- Mandatory Requirement: Aadhaar verification is now required for users booking tickets on the first day of the reservation cycle.
- System Upgrade: A new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is being rolled out to handle higher booking volumes.
New Booking Rules and System Upgrades
This announcement comes as Indian Railways implements significant operational changes to streamline the passenger experience. Effective from November 1, the advance reservation period for most trains has been reduced to 60 days. Travelers should note that for general reserved tickets, the online booking window consistently opens at 8:00 AM sharp. To ensure transparency and curb fraudulent activities, the national transporter has made Aadhaar verification mandatory for those attempting to book tickets on the opening day of the reservation cycle.
Modernizing the Passenger Experience
These policy changes are being supported by a major technological overhaul of the Indian Railways’ Passenger Reservation System. The legacy architecture, which has been in place since 1986, is being replaced by a modern, high-capacity platform. This upgrade is designed to increase booking capacity to over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute. By transitioning to this modern infrastructure, the Railways aims to provide a smoother, more efficient booking experience for millions of passengers, particularly during peak travel periods and the upcoming festival season when demand typically surges. Passengers are encouraged to keep their IRCTC profiles updated with necessary Aadhaar details to avoid any last-minute hurdles during the booking process.
