The Varanasi-Meerut Vande Bharat Express has significantly enhanced connectivity across North India, offering a seamless travel experience between two of Uttar Pradesh’s most prominent cities. Operational since August 2025, this premium service provides a modern and efficient alternative for passengers, effectively bridging the distance in less than 12 hours. Key highlights of the service include:

  • Travel Time: The train completes the journey in approximately 11 hours and 50 minutes to 11 hours and 55 minutes.
  • Route Coverage: It spans a distance of roughly 782 to 783 kilometers.
  • Operational Frequency: The train runs six days a week.
  • Train Numbers: Service 22489 operates from Varanasi to Meerut, while 22490 handles the return journey.

Connecting Key Cities in Uttar Pradesh

This service is an extension of the previously established Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express. The route is strategically designed to serve major transit hubs, with key stoppages at Ayodhya Dham, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Moradabad. This connectivity is a major boost for commuters traveling between the eastern and western parts of the state.

Inauguration and Official Context

The train was ceremonially flagged off at Varanasi Junction by the Minister of State for AYUSH and Food Safety, Dr. Dayashankar Mishra ‘Dayalu’, in the presence of Cantt MLA Saurabh Srivastava. The expansion of this service has also received strong support from senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Laxmikant Vajpayee, who highlighted the importance of such high-speed links for regional development.

While social media platforms have featured the train’s successful operations throughout August 2026, it is important to note that the Railway Board’s general announcements regarding new service approvals on August 11, 2026, did not include specific updates for this route. As of now, the Varanasi-Meerut Vande Bharat continues to maintain its standard schedule, providing a reliable and comfortable transit option for passengers across the region.
