The Railway Board has directed the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to update the Detailed Project Report for the Varanasi-Siliguri high-speed rail corridor. This project aims to connect Uttar Pradesh with West Bengal while passing through major districts in Bihar. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary highlighted this development as a significant step for connectivity in the state.

Which cities will the Bullet Train cover in Bihar?
The proposed corridor spans approximately 750 km between Varanasi and Siliguri. According to the plan, the high-speed train will have stoppages at several key locations in Bihar. These include Buxar, Arrah, Patna, Mokama, Maner, Katihar, and Kishanganj. To avoid congestion within the main city, authorities plan to build a state-of-the-art bullet train station for Patna within a radius of 15 to 20 km from the city center.
What is the expected speed and travel time?
This high-speed rail project focuses on drastically reducing travel time for passengers. The trains are expected to operate at speeds ranging from 300 km/h to 350 km/h. This speed will bring down the travel time between Varanasi and Siliguri from the current 14-18 hours to under 3 hours.
- Operating Speed: 300 to 350 km/h
- Estimated Time: Approx 2 hours 55 minutes
- Track Type: Elevated tracks (approx 40 feet high) in dense areas
- Safety: Tracks may be covered with bulletproof glass in specific zones
The project is part of a larger investment plan for high-speed corridors across the country. The tracks will be elevated in densely populated regions to ensure safety and minimal disruption on the ground.
