The long-awaited Jalalgarh-Kishanganj new rail line project is finally seeing progress after a wait of 17 years. Railways have prepared a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this 51.632 km long route and submitted it to the Railway Board for final approval. The project cost is now estimated at 1852 crore rupees, bringing fresh hope for better connectivity in the Seemanchal region of Bihar.

What are the major benefits for Seemanchal?
This rail line is set to transform the connectivity landscape of the region. It will shorten the travel distance between Katihar and Kishanganj and link the Purnia division to a robust rail network. Trains from New Jalpaiguri will have a direct route to Katihar via Purnia, making travel smoother for passengers.
Beyond travel, the project holds economic value by helping local farmers transport agricultural produce to larger markets. It also serves a vital role for flood-affected blocks like Jalalgarh, Amour, and Baisa, ensuring that transport links remain open even during natural calamities.
Details on stations and strategic importance
This project is strategically important for the country as it provides an alternate route to the sensitive Chicken Neck corridor. The plan proposes the construction of 8 new stations, including:
- Khatahat
- Rauta
- Mahingaon
First announced in the 2008-09 rail budget with an initial cost of 360 crore rupees, the project has seen a significant cost rise over time. Local organizations and railway officials are now hopeful for a quick approval from the center to start construction soon.
