Indian Railways accelerates 3rd and 4th line work between Anand Vihar and Tilak Bridge to end train delays

Indian Railways has increased the pace of laying the third and fourth railway lines between Anand Vihar and Tilak Bridge in Delhi. This 9.77 km project aims to solve the problem of trains getting stuck at Ghaziabad and Delhi outer areas before entering major stations like New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin. Once these additional tracks are functional, the capacity of this crucial section will improve significantly.

Why is the Anand Vihar to Tilak Bridge project essential for passengers?

Currently, the railway stretch between Anand Vihar and Tilak Bridge operates with only two tracks, creating a major bottleneck. While the tracks leading to this section are wider, the reduction to just two lines causes heavy congestion. This bottleneck affects nearly 180 passenger trains and 42 goods trains every day, leading to frequent delays at the outskirts of Delhi. The addition of the third and fourth lines will allow for a dedicated path and smoother flow for incoming traffic from the Ghaziabad side.

Key project details and infrastructure development

The project involves complex engineering and infrastructure upgrades to support the new lines. A significant hurdle was cleared on December 10, 2025, when a Supreme Court committee permitted the removal of trees for construction. The railway is also integrating modern station designs under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme for better passenger facilities. Specific project details are listed below:

Project Component Details
Total Length 9.77 Kilometers
Expected Completion December 31, 2027
Major Infrastructure New Yamuna Rail Bridge, 2 Underbridges, 2 Overbridges
Stations Involved Anand विहार and तिलक ब्रिज (Amrit Bharat Scheme)
Daily Impact Reduced delays for 222 total trains

As part of the modernization, Tilak Bridge station will be developed using a deck model, similar to the Khar Road station in Mumbai. This design includes upper halls and lower platforms equipped with lifts and escalators. The project also includes yard modifications at Mandawali Chander Vihar to accommodate the new track layout.
