Jaisalmer railway station has undergone a massive transformation with a redevelopment project costing nearly 140 crore. This initiative by Indian Railways aims to blend the traditional heritage of the Golden City with modern high-tech infrastructure. The station is now equipped to offer passengers an experience similar to luxury hotels while improving operational efficiency through advanced technical facilities.
What are the main passenger amenities at the redeveloped station?
The station building features a stunning design made of local yellow sandstone, preserving the traditional Rajasthani aesthetic. Passengers can now enjoy several modern facilities that were previously unavailable at this desert location. Key highlights include:
- Installation of modern lifts and escalators for easy floor access
- Development of a large air concourse and executive lounges
- New food courts and a shopping complex within the station premises
- Inclusive design with ramps and special toilets for specially-abled passengers
- Advanced digital passenger information systems and better signage
How will the technical upgrades benefit train operations?
Beyond passenger comfort, the project includes a major overhaul of the Jaisalmer railway yard. According to Divisional Railway Manager Anurag Tripathi, the maintenance work reached its final stages in March 2026. The technical upgrades include a dedicated coach maintenance facility, an electric loco trip shed, and tower wagon siding. These improvements are crucial because they allow the railway to maintain trains locally, which will lead to the introduction of more long-distance trains from Jaisalmer. The upgrades also focus on making train operations more punctual and safer for everyone.
