Indian Railways to install panic buttons at stations for passenger safety, quick RPF response assured

Indian Railways is set to enhance passenger security by installing emergency panic buttons across various railway stations. This new system aims to provide immediate assistance to travelers during emergencies by alerting the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and station staff instantly. The initiative is being implemented in phases across divisions like Samastipur, Pune, and Central Railway to ensure a safer travel environment for everyone.

ℹ: New Train Announcement: Indian Railways to run special trains between Malda Town, Anand Vihar and Kolkata, Mau।

How does the railway panic button system work

The panic button functions as an emergency alarm system integrated with the existing CCTV network. When a passenger presses the button, a loud siren sounds at the station to alert nearby personnel. Simultaneously, an alert is sent to the RPF control room and station staff. Security teams can then monitor the situation through cameras and reach the spot within minutes to provide help.

Implementation details across different railway divisions

  • Samastipur Division: A, B, and C category stations including Muzaffarpur will get the system within 50 days of the project start.
  • Central Railway: Plans are in place to install panic switches at 117 stations, with two switches on every platform.
  • Pune Division: Stations like Pune, Pimpri, and Chinchwad are scheduled for installation following a detailed survey.
  • Mumbai Local: Women compartments are being equipped with emergency talk-back systems and panic buttons alongside CCTV cameras.

RailTel is collaborating with various zones like Central Railway to execute the installation work. The primary goal is to deter crime and ensure quick response during medical emergencies or security threats. These buttons are specifically designed to be easily accessible to passengers on platforms and inside coaches.
