🗞️: Asansol Railway Division: Several trains cancelled and rescheduled on April 12 for maintenance work।
What are the major infrastructure and train updates expected by 2026?
The railway ministry is focusing on green energy and high-speed travel through various new projects. A total of eight key modifications are scheduled to be completed within the next two years. These changes are designed to make travel more high-tech and environment friendly for millions of daily commuters.
| Feature | Update Details |
|---|---|
| Hydrogen Trains | Trial completed at 85 kmph, launch expected by January 2026. |
| Vande Bharat Sleeper | 12 new sleeper rakes to be introduced by December 2026. |
| 100% Electrification | Broad gauge network to be fully electrified by FY 2026-27. |
| 75 Holding Areas | Permanent passenger waiting areas at 75 major stations. |
| Boarding Station | Change boarding point digitally up to 30 minutes before departure. |
| Class Upgrade | Option to upgrade travel class 30 minutes before the train starts. |
| Ticket Refund | New rules require cancellation 8 hours before for a refund. |
| Counter Cancellation | Cancel counter tickets at any railway station across India. |
How will the new ticketing and boarding rules work?
The new ticket refund policy will be stricter from April 2026. Passengers must cancel their tickets at least eight hours before the train starts to get a refund. Previously, this window was four hours. If a ticket is canceled between 24 to 8 hours before departure, only 50 percent of the amount will be refunded. No refund will be given if the cancellation happens less than eight hours before the journey.
For counter tickets, passengers will no longer need to visit the specific boarding or destination station for a refund. Any railway counter across India will be able to process the cancellation and refund. Additionally, passengers can now change their boarding station or upgrade their travel class digitally up to 30 minutes before the train leaves its starting station.
