Northern Railway has completed a significant signaling upgrade on the Ghaziabad-Meerut-Saharanpur rail section to increase train speeds to 130 kmph. This infrastructure modernization aims to provide a faster and more efficient travel experience for passengers in Western Uttar Pradesh. The new system underwent a successful trial on April 15, 2026, when train number 12903 safely crossed the upgraded stretch.

Key technical features of the new signaling system
The upgrade includes the commissioning of double distant signals at Pabli Khas and Meerut Cantt railway stations. This system provides advance notice to loco pilots, which is essential for maintaining high speeds safely. The project involved testing a total of 90 routes to ensure everything works perfectly under high-speed conditions.
- Electronic Interlocking systems installed at Meerut Cantt and Pabli Khas
- Modern Electric Lifting Barriers at level crossing LC-31C
- Visual Display Units for better monitoring by station staff
- Integrated Power Supply systems for uninterrupted operations
Expected benefits for daily rail passengers
Northern Railway officials stated that the double distant signaling system ensures better visibility and control for high-speed trains. This reduces the need for sudden braking and helps in maintaining strict schedules. Passengers traveling on the Meerut-Saharanpur corridor can expect shorter journey times and improved punctuality due to these technical improvements. The system is designed to handle increased traffic while maintaining the highest safety standards for all operations.
