The Uttarakhand government has submitted a proposal to the central government for the expansion of the Namo Bharat train services from Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh. This project aims to extend the existing Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor to provide faster connectivity to the spiritual hubs of Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently met with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the progress of this expansion, which is expected to transform regional mobility and boost tourism in the state.

Key features of the proposed Namo Bharat expansion

The extension is planned from the current terminal at Modipuram in Meerut along National Highway 58. This expansion will significantly benefit commuters and pilgrims who currently rely on road transport. Below are the key highlights of the proposal:

  • Route Expansion: The line will move from Modipuram towards Daurala, Sakoti, Khatauli, and Purkazi in Uttar Pradesh, eventually reaching Roorkee, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.
  • Travel Time: The journey from Delhi-NCR to Rishikesh is expected to take only 2.25 to 3 hours, compared to the current 6 to 7 hours by road.
  • Current Corridor: The existing 82 km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to Modipuram is already operational and covers the distance in about 60 minutes.
  • Economic Impact: The project is expected to act as a catalyst for real estate growth, industrial expansion, and local business development in Western UP and Uttarakhand.

Project status and potential challenges

Following the high-level meeting in April 2026, the central government has given a positive response to the expansion plans. A Detailed Project Report is expected to be commissioned soon to finalize the technical aspects. Officials believe that the rapid rail will serve as a reliable alternative to congested highways, particularly during peak pilgrimage seasons and events like the Kumbh Mela. However, the project might face certain logistical hurdles during implementation.

Challenge Category Description
Environment Obtaining clearances for tracks near the Rajaji National Park area
Land Acquisition Securing land along the busy National Highway 58 for track construction
Construction Building elevated tracks or tunnels in the hilly terrain leading to Rishikesh
Cost Higher investment required for infrastructure in complex geographical zones
