Indian Railways has introduced significant changes to the timing of reservation chart preparation to help passengers plan their journeys better. The Ministry of Railways issued a new circular revising the first chart preparation time to at least 10 hours before the train scheduled departure. This update aims to reduce uncertainty for waiting list passengers and provide ample time for making alternative travel arrangements if needed.
What are the new timings for first reservation chart preparation?
The first reservation chart is now prepared much earlier than the previous window to provide more clarity to travelers. For trains departing between 5:01 AM and 2:00 PM, the chart will be finalized by 8:00 PM the previous evening. For trains departing after 2:00 PM and before 5:01 AM the next day, the chart will be generated at least 10 hours before departure. This rule applies uniformly across all zones for better coordination and transparency.
How does the second reservation chart and seat allocation work?
The second or final reservation chart is prepared approximately 30 minutes before the train scheduled departure from the originating station. At this stage, any vacant berths, including those from the Tatkal quota, are allocated to passengers on the RAC and waiting lists. This final process ensures maximum occupancy and gives waitlisted passengers a final chance at confirmation before the journey begins.
Key benefits of the revised charting system
- Passengers receive ticket status much earlier than before
- It helps in reducing the crowd at railway stations for unconfirmed tickets
- Waiting list passengers get more time to find alternative travel options
- The system brings more transparency to the seat allocation process
- Specific rules for morning trains help passengers planning early travel
