Indian Railways has started strictly enforcing luggage rules for passengers. Carrying more than the allowed weight limit can lead to heavy penalties. Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified in Parliament that passengers must pay extra charges or fines if they exceed the set limits.
What is the free luggage limit for different classes?
Passengers are allowed a specific amount of luggage for free based on their ticket class. If you carry more than this, you may be charged. The details are as follows:
| Class | Free Weight Limit | Max Limit (with fee) |
|---|---|---|
| AC First Class (1A) | 70 kg | 150 kg |
| AC 2-Tier (2A) | 50 kg | 100 kg |
| AC 3-Tier (3A) | 40 kg | Not Specified |
| Sleeper Class (SL) | 40 kg | 70-80 kg |
| Second Sitting (2S) | 35 kg | 70-80 kg |
What are the penalties and booking rules for extra luggage?
If a passenger is caught with extra luggage without prior booking, they can be fined up to six times the normal luggage rate. However, if the luggage is booked at the parcel office 30 minutes before departure, the charge is 1.5 times the normal rate. The railway provides some relief for an extra 5 to 15 kg by charging only the normal fee.
What are the rules for luggage size and new checks?
Along with weight, the size of the bag also matters. Suitcases or trunks should not exceed 100 cm in length, 60 cm in width, and 25 cm in height. Larger bags must be booked in the luggage coach. To manage this, North Central Railway is installing electronic weighing machines at major stations like Prayagraj Junction and Kanpur Central to check luggage before passengers enter the platform.
