Indian Railways has officially approved a new daily express train service connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road. This strategic move, announced on August 1, 2026, is set to transform travel across the picturesque Konkan region by providing a reliable and direct rail link for thousands of daily passengers. The service is a collaborative effort between the Central Railway, Konkan Railway, and the Ministry of Railways to streamline regional transportation.
- New daily express service connecting Mumbai CSMT and Sawantwadi Road.
- The route covers approximately 510 km with 22 scheduled halts.
- Designed to support tourists, students, traders, and daily commuters.
- Part of a broader initiative to strengthen rail infrastructure in the Konkan belt.
Boosting Konkan Connectivity
The introduction of this daily express is a major win for the Konkan region. By connecting Mumbai’s primary terminus to Sawantwadi Road, Indian Railways aims to reduce the burden on existing services and provide a more consistent travel option. The train will cover the 510-km route with 22 operational halts, ensuring that smaller towns and communities along the Konkan belt gain better access to the state capital.
Festival Specials and Infrastructure Upgrades
This approval comes at a time when the Konkan Railway is seeing significant operational focus. To manage the high passenger demand during the upcoming Ganpati Festival 2026, Central Railway and Konkan Railway have already lined up several daily special trains operating between Mumbai CSMT and Sawantwadi Road from September 11 to September 27, 2026.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Railways has been actively testing and upgrading infrastructure in the region. In late July 2026, the department introduced experimental halts at Sawantwadi Road station for three pairs of existing long-distance trains, including the Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction Superfast Express. These combined efforts demonstrate a clear commitment from the authorities to prioritize the Konkan corridor, ensuring that residents and visitors alike enjoy a seamless transit experience throughout the year.
