The Indian Government announced several key decisions to boost the railway, agriculture, and MSME sectors. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the travel time between Mumbai and Pune will be reduced to just 48 minutes once the high-speed rail corridor is ready. Along with this, the government approved various projects to expand the rail network and support farmers.

What are the major railway updates and new projects

The government is focusing on speed and connectivity across the country. A budget of ₹23,926 crore was released for Maharashtra, which includes the Mumbai-Pune high-speed corridor. Additionally, the budget 2026 announced seven high-speed corridors, including Pune-Hyderabad and Delhi-Varanasi.

  • New Networks: ₹24,815 crore approved for 601 km of new tracks in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Capacity Increase: Third and fourth tracks approved for Nagda-Mathura, Guntakal-Wadi, and Burhwal-Sitapur lines.
  • New Zone: South Coast Railway Zone will be officially notified on June 1, 2026, with its headquarters in Visakhapatnam.
  • Connectivity: Doubling of tracks on the Jammu-Srinagar rail corridor to increase train frequency.

What are the benefits for farmers and MSMEs

The cabinet approved the Kapas Kranti Mission with a budget of ₹5,659 crore to increase cotton production from 2026-27 to 2030-31. For sugarcane farmers, the FRP for the 2026-27 season was approved, which will benefit around one crore farmers with a financial impact of ₹1 lakh crore.
