A massive landslide in the Lonavala-Karjat ghat section on July 6, 2026, has caused significant disruptions to train operations across the Central Railway network. The incident, triggered by relentless heavy rainfall, occurred between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill Loop Cabin, as well as between Khandala and Monkey Hill. As a result, several train services have been cancelled, rescheduled, or short-terminated through July 9 and 10 to ensure passenger safety and facilitate urgent track restoration work.

Key updates regarding the ongoing situation:

  • 1,100 workers and heavy machinery are currently engaged in round-the-clock restoration efforts.
  • The middle line was declared safe for operation with speed restrictions on July 7.
  • A 6-km stretch of the Up line has been successfully restored.
  • Major train cancellations include the Deccan Queen, Deccan Express, and CSMT-Pune Intercity.
  • Passengers are advised to verify train status via the NTES app or official railway portals before heading to the station.

Intensive Restoration Operations

Central Railway is tackling the damage with a comprehensive technical approach. Beyond just clearing debris, teams are working to stabilize the vulnerable hillside to prevent future incidents. This includes the construction of gabion retaining walls, extensive earth filling, the installation of high-strength rockfall fencing, and the use of advanced rock bolting techniques. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is personally monitoring the situation and has directed officials to accelerate the restoration of the remaining lines to normalize traffic as quickly as possible.

Impact on Passenger Services

The disruption has forced the cancellation of several popular services. On July 9, the Pune-CSMT Deccan Queen, Deccan Express, and the CSMT-Pune Intercity Express remained cancelled. Furthermore, the 11027 Dadar-Satara Express has been cancelled for July 10.

Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, has urged commuters to remain patient and stay updated through official channels. The railway administration has activated dedicated helpline numbers to provide real-time assistance to affected passengers. Travelers are strongly encouraged to check the latest schedules on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or the official Indian Railways website before planning their commute through the affected ghat sections.
