This landmark service eliminates the need for manual transshipment at the border, a process that previously caused significant delays and increased expenses. By enabling direct rail movement of containerized cargo via the Jogbani-Biratnagar broad-gauge link, the new arrangement ensures a seamless supply chain. This specific rail link, which serves as the backbone of this operation, was constructed with Indian grant assistance and was jointly inaugurated by the leadership of both nations in June 2023.
Strategic Benefits for Trade
The initiative follows a revised Letter of Exchange signed in November 2025, which updated the existing treaty of transit. According to the Ministry of Railways, this shift will drastically improve the reliability and competitiveness of trade between the two neighbors.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway, noted that this development reinforces India’s commitment to modernizing regional infrastructure. On the Nepali side, officials highlighted that the direct service will effectively lower container detention charges and provide a safer, more predictable logistics network for importers and exporters. By streamlining operations and reducing multiple handling points, the service is set to benefit industries on both sides of the border, providing a much-needed boost to bilateral commerce.
