Indian Railways has taken a significant leap toward inclusive travel by launching an AI-based sign language system designed specifically for deaf and mute passengers. This innovative technology provides real-time accessibility to essential train information, ensuring that ‘divyangjans’ can navigate railway stations with greater independence. The system, which captures live public address announcements and instantly converts them into Indian Sign Language displayed on LED screens, was officially implemented at Badshahnagar railway station in the Lucknow Division around July 7-8, 2026.

  • The technology provides real-time updates on train arrivals, departures, delays, and platform changes.
  • The initiative aligns with the national Sugamya Bharat Mission (Accessible India Campaign).
  • The project was developed in-house by the Signal and Telecommunication Department of the Lucknow Division.
  • Following a successful two-month trial, the system is now set for a nationwide rollout at major stations.

Empowering Passengers through Technology

The development of this system was spearheaded by the Lucknow Division under the guidance of Senior Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer Vaibhav Shrivastava. According to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Gaurav Agarwal, the primary goal is to remove communication barriers for passengers with disabilities. By providing visual sign language interpretations of audio announcements, the Railways ensures that no passenger is left uninformed due to hearing or speech impairments.

To ensure the system’s accuracy and effectiveness, the Lucknow Division collaborated with Techtron Infotech Private Limited and worked closely with a Noida-based organization that specializes in support services for the deaf and mute community. Certified sign language interpreters were also involved throughout the trial and validation phases to refine the AI’s output, making the information clear and easy to understand for the end-users.

Expanding Accessibility Nationwide

The successful deployment at Badshahnagar serves as a pilot project for the broader vision of Indian Railways. As part of its commitment to becoming more accessible, the national transporter plans to gradually extend this facility to other major railway stations across the country. This move is expected to significantly improve the passenger experience, making rail travel safer, more convenient, and truly inclusive for all, regardless of their physical abilities. By integrating advanced technology into station infrastructure, Indian Railways continues to modernize its services while prioritizing the needs of every traveler.
