The historic Kalka-Shimla rail line is set to undergo a major security upgrade with the installation of 170 high-tech Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled CCTV cameras across its railway stations. This initiative, reported on July 29, 2026, represents a significant step toward modernizing surveillance along one of India’s most iconic heritage routes.
Key highlights of this security project include:
• Deployment of 170 AI-powered high-definition cameras at stations.
• Integration with real-time threat detection tools via the IndiaAI mission.
• Advanced surveillance capability in low-light and high-speed conditions.
• Strategic 360-degree coverage inside coaches to deter criminal activity.
Modernizing Rail Surveillance
This initiative is part of a larger, nationwide effort by the Ministry of Railways, under the leadership of Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, to overhaul the safety infrastructure of the Indian Railways network. The Railway Board is actively pushing for the implementation of high-definition surveillance systems that can perform reliably even under challenging environmental conditions. By leveraging AI, these systems can provide real-time analysis, allowing authorities to detect and respond to potential threats much faster than traditional monitoring methods.
National Rollout and Coach Safety
Beyond the Kalka-Shimla section, Indian Railways has an ambitious roadmap to equip its entire fleet, covering **74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives**. Successful trials have already been conducted on Northern Railway engines and coaches. To ensure comprehensive security, each coach will be fitted with **four dome-type CCTV cameras** positioned near the entrances to provide high-resolution coverage while maintaining passenger privacy.
Furthermore, the commitment to safety is already visible on the heritage route, where the **new panoramic coaches of the Kalka-Shimla toy train** are already equipped with integrated CCTV cameras and advanced fire alarm systems. These collective measures are designed to curb criminal activity, monitor suspicious behavior, and significantly elevate the overall travel experience for tourists and local commuters alike. As Indian Railways continues to integrate cutting-edge technology, passengers can expect a safer and more secure journey across the mountain railway network.
