Lucknow’s historic Charbagh Railway Station is currently in the midst of a massive ₹400 crore redevelopment project that promises to turn the iconic landmark into a modern, airport-like transit hub. As part of the government’s ambitious ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme,’ the renovation is designed to blend the station’s rich heritage with cutting-edge infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed between late 2026 and June 2027, marking a new era for rail connectivity in Uttar Pradesh.
- Budget: Over ₹400 crore allocated for comprehensive station modernization.
- Capacity Expansion: Platform count increasing from nine to eleven.
- Modern Amenities: A new seven-story building featuring 14 lifts, 13 escalators, and three auditoriums.
- Sustainability: Incorporating green building concepts and rooftop solar panels.
- Connectivity: Seamless integration with the local metro network.
Upgraded Infrastructure and Passenger Facilities
Managed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), the project focuses on streamlining passenger movement through a massive 115-meter long and 120-meter wide air concourse. A new 45,270-square-meter station building on the Anand Nagar side will serve as the heart of the facility, providing passengers with modern food courts, spacious waiting areas, and comfortable dormitories. While the project introduces a sleek, modern architectural style for the rear entrance, authorities have confirmed that the station’s original heritage aesthetic will be carefully preserved.
Construction Progress and Operational Updates
Railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of North Eastern Railway’s Lucknow Division, are closely monitoring the construction to ensure it stays on track. To facilitate the installation of the new air concourse, old tin sheds on platforms 1 through 7 have been removed. This follows safety-focused upgrades initiated after an incident on platform five in May 2026.
To accelerate construction, a significant operational block was implemented from May 31 to June 4, 2026. This phase required the diversion of 22 trains and platform changes for 68 others, reflecting the scale of the ongoing engineering efforts. Once finalized, the revamped Charbagh station will not only handle higher passenger volumes more efficiently but also serve as a benchmark for future railway station redevelopment projects across India.
