The 96-year-old heritage building at Mumbai Central Station is undergoing a transformation as Western Railway (WR) prepares to launch a new budget hotel on its third floor. This initiative is part of a larger plan to repurpose underutilized heritage spaces for the convenience of passengers while preserving the station’s historical integrity. Key updates regarding the project include:
- The existing retiring rooms on the third floor will permanently close on July 31, 2026.
- Restoration and repair work is scheduled to commence on August 1, 2026.
- The facility is expected to reopen to the public within three to four months after the start of work.
- The hotel will offer both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms with modern amenities.
Preserving Heritage While Modernizing
Western Railway officials have confirmed that the project will focus on restoring the space without making any structural changes to the heritage building, which dates back to 1930. A significant part of the charm will be maintained, as the restoration efforts aim to preserve original features, including teakwood cupboards that are estimated to be five to seven decades old. By partnering with a private operator to renovate and manage the facility, Western Railway expects to generate approximately ₹50 lakh in revenue over a five-year license period.
Broader Redevelopment Plans
This hotel project is just one component of a wider redevelopment strategy for the iconic Mumbai Central station. Beyond the third-floor renovations, WR is planning a passenger-focused commercial plaza covering 1,500 square meters on reclaimed land outside the station. This area is slated to include a digital business lounge, food kiosks, premium catering outlets, and landscaped public spaces designed to improve pedestrian movement.
As a vital transport hub connecting Western Railway, Central Railway, and the new Metro Line 3, Mumbai Central continues to evolve to meet the needs of modern commuters.
