The Pundit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (PDDDU) Railway Division has launched a proactive initiative on July 20, 2026, aimed at streamlining the transportation of perishable goods like fruits and vegetables through its rail parcel network. By focusing on demand-driven solutions, the division is working closely with local farmers and traders to create a more efficient logistics framework that caters to their specific needs. Key highlights of this new railway initiative include:

  • Direct engagement with producers and traders to assess specific logistical requirements.
  • Implementation of tailored parcel transport arrangements based on operational feasibility.
  • Focus on key stations including PDDDU Junction, Bhabua Road, Sasaram, Dehri-on-Sone, Anugrah Narayan Road, Gaya Junction, Japla, and Bikramganj.
  • Promotion of rail parcel services as a safer, faster, and more eco-friendly alternative to road transport.

Enhancing Connectivity for Farmers and Traders

The PDDDU Division is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of potential parcel traffic at major stations across its network. By gathering granular data from the agricultural community, the railways aim to optimize their existing infrastructure to support the supply chain of perishable commodities. Rail parcel service is being positioned as a superior alternative to traditional cargo methods, offering significant advantages in terms of speed, cost-efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Building on National Schemes

This initiative complements existing nationwide efforts by Indian Railways, such as the iconic Kisan Rail service, which is dedicated to the seamless transit of perishables including dairy, poultry, and fresh produce. Furthermore, the Operation Greens – Top to Total scheme continues to provide a vital 50 percent freight subsidy to help reduce the financial burden on farmers. To further encourage small-scale participation, the Railways have streamlined parcel loading rules by removing turnover conditions and reducing aggregator fees, making it easier than ever for small traders to utilize rail transport.

How to Get Involved

The PDDDU Division is actively inviting feedback and transport requirements from those involved in the fruit and vegetable trade. Interested parties can reach out to Mr. Anil Kumar, Chief Ticket Inspector (Headquarters), at 9651450139 to share details or inquire about available services. This move marks a significant step toward integrating local agricultural markets into the national rail network, ensuring that fresh produce reaches consumers across the country with minimal transit loss.
