South East Central Railway installs real-time water monitoring on 12 key bridges

The South East Central Railway (SECR) has taken a proactive step toward monsoon safety by deploying an advanced, sensor-based water level monitoring system across 12 critical railway bridges in the Bilaspur Zone. This technological upgrade marks a significant shift from traditional manual monitoring, ensuring that the railway administration can maintain 24×7 surveillance of water bodies during the rainy season to keep train operations safe and uninterrupted.

  • 12 crucial bridges across rivers like the Ib, Hasdeo, and Shivnath have been equipped with the new system.
  • The technology provides 24×7 real-time surveillance of river water levels.
  • Automated SMS alerts are sent instantly to senior officials when water reaches warning or danger marks.
  • The system was successfully tested and made operational on July 8th and 9th.

Enhancing Safety Through Automation

For years, Indian Railways relied on manual meter gauges to track water levels near bridge foundations. However, these methods were often susceptible to human error and reporting delays, especially during flash floods or heavy downpours. The new automated system eliminates these risks by providing precise data directly to Assistant Divisional Engineers and Rail Track Inspectors. By receiving instant notifications on their mobile devices, officials can now initiate safety protocols and speed restrictions much faster than before.

Strategic Infrastructure Protection

The selection of these 12 bridges is strategic, focusing on major river crossings that are vital for the smooth movement of passenger and freight traffic. By integrating this technology into the existing track management system, SECR has created a robust safety net that allows for rapid decision-making. This move not only protects critical infrastructure from potential flood damage but also ensures that rail services remain uninterrupted during the most challenging weather conditions of the monsoon. The successful implementation of this project underscores the zone’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency across the Bilaspur division.
