The Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) is set to enhance transportation in the National Capital Region (NCR) by implementing a new master plan that includes the establishment of a rapid metro system. This initiative aims to connect Faridabad with key locations such as Jewar Airport, Gurugram, and Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi. Currently, transportation options between Faridabad and Gurugram are limited to road routes, causing around 50,000 commuters to rely on cabs, buses, or personal vehicles daily. The lack of metro connectivity has raised safety concerns, particularly for women traveling at night.
Proposed Metro Routes and Stations
The planned rapid metro network will feature multiple routes to improve access and efficiency. One of the significant routes will connect Ballabhgarh to Jewar Airport, facilitating smoother travel to Delhi and Gurugram. Notable stations mentioned include Sarai Kale Khan, IFFCO Chowk, and Bata Chowk. Currently, commuters must navigate through multiple transfers in Delhi to reach their destinations, which is both time-consuming and costly. The introduction of the rapid metro is expected to benefit approximately 200,000 people daily and alleviate traffic congestion in the region.
Master Plan and Future Steps
FMDA is tasked with preparing the Master Plan-2041, which will include plans for the rapid metro system. The draft of this master plan will be open to public objections and suggestions before it is finalized and submitted for government approval. Once approved, detailed project reports (DPR) will be developed in collaboration with a consultant agency to initiate construction. FMDA Chief District Town Planner Sudhir Singh Chauhan emphasized that the rapid metro connectivity will be a cornerstone of the new plan, aiming to enhance transport links between Faridabad, Jewar Airport, Noida, and Gurugram.
