Overview of Indian Railways

Indian Railways is a crucial transportation network that operates thousands of trains across India, significantly contributing to the country’s connectivity. It connects remote border areas to major metropolitan cities, earning the title of the “lifeline of the country.” As a convenient and economical means of travel, Indian Railways sees lakhs of passengers commuting daily. To ensure a smooth travel experience, the organization has implemented various rules and regulations.

Regulations Against Alcohol Consumption

One of the significant rules enforced by Indian Railways pertains to alcohol consumption while traveling. It is illegal to travel on trains after consuming alcohol, and strict measures are taken against those who violate this rule. Under Section 145 of the Indian Railway Act 1989, passengers caught traveling in a drunken state may have their tickets confiscated and face a fine of Rs 500. Additionally, they can be subjected to a jail term of up to 6 months if found misbehaving.

Smoking Regulations

In addition to alcohol regulations, Indian Railways also prohibits smoking on trains. This rule is enforced under Section 167 of the Indian Railway Act 1989, which imposes a fine of Rs 100 for those caught smoking cigarettes onboard. Signs indicating that smoking is prohibited are displayed in every coach to remind passengers of this regulation. These measures are in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all travelers using the rail network.
