Indian Railways is working on a mega plan to develop smaller towns by improving rail connectivity and infrastructure. The goal is to reduce the pressure on big cities and provide better facilities to passengers in smaller urban centers. This plan includes expanding terminals and adding more tracks to the network.

What are the key infrastructure projects for smaller towns?

The government has approved two major multi-tracking projects in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 24,815 crore. These projects will add about 601 km to the network by 2030-31. To reduce crowd at main stations, six new stations will be built on bypass sections. This will help in faster movement of both passengers and goods trains.

How will train capacity be increased in cities?

Indian Railways plans to double the train-originating capacity in 48 major cities by 2030. This will be done by building new coaching terminals and upgrading existing ones. The ministry will also improve signaling systems and build mega coaching complexes for better train maintenance. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these steps will meet the rising demand of passengers.

What is the role of RVNL in these developments?

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is executing several high-value projects to improve connectivity. Recently, RVNL got a contract of Rs 371.69 crore for a township in Kirandul, Chhattisgarh. They are also installing video surveillance systems in LHB coaches worth Rs 87.56 crore. Satish Kumar, Chairman & CEO of the Railway Board, mentioned that RVNL has already delivered over 17,000 km of infrastructure.
