Indian Railways has taken swift disciplinary action following a viral incident on the Nandigram Express, where a First Class AC coupe was transformed into a ‘honeymoon suite’. The incident occurred on July 6, 2026, during a journey from Jalna to Mumbai on Train No. 11002. Passengers Shubham and Sonali reportedly hired an external decorator to adorn their cabin with balloons, flowers, rose petals, and fairy lights. The presence of candles alongside these decorations prompted immediate concern from railway authorities regarding passenger safety and fire hazards.
Key details of the incident and subsequent action include:
- CTI Girish Kumar suspended by South Central Railway (SCR) on July 8, 2026, for failing to maintain protocol.
- The decorator gained unauthorized entry into the coach at Jalna station, marking a significant security breach.
- Railway authorities have classified the incident as a serious lapse in operational safety.
- The decorator is now facing legal action under the Railway Act for trespassing and unauthorized entry.
Strict Safety Protocols and Legal Consequences
Railway officials have reiterated that coaches and coupes remain public property, regardless of whether they have been fully booked by passengers. Decorations using plastic ribbons, rubber balloons, and artificial flowers are strictly prohibited under existing railway guidelines. Furthermore, the use of additional electrical devices or open flames like candles introduces a severe risk of short-circuits and fire, which could endanger the lives of all passengers on board.
Under the Railway Act, carrying highly inflammable materials or unauthorized decoration of coaches can lead to imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to 1,000 rupees. In more severe cases where such actions lead to a fire, offenders could face up to three years of imprisonment.
Accountability and Departmental Inquiry
As the Chief Ticket Inspector, Girish Kumar was responsible for supervising staff duties and ensuring that railway regulations were upheld. The South Central Railway has launched a detailed departmental inquiry to determine how an unauthorized individual was able to board the train and carry out these decorations without detection. Officials emphasize that Indian Railways maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward such breaches, as they compromise both the sanctity of railway property and the safety of the travelling public. The railway administration continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent any recurrence of such unauthorized commercial activities on board trains.
