Indian Railways has planned a major capacity upgrade for passenger trains to address the issue of overcrowding in local commutes. The Muzaffarpur division will begin expanding the coach count of 29 pairs of MEMU, DEMU, and Intercity Express trains. Under this initiative, the existing 12-coach rakes will be replaced or augmented with 16 coaches to accommodate more passengers.
Expected benefits for daily passengers
- The addition of four extra coaches will increase the seating capacity by over 500 seats per train.
- Commuters on the Motihari and Narkatiaganj routes will experience the most relief due to high daily demand.
- More space inside the train is expected to reduce the dangerous practice of footboard traveling.
- Railway officials believe that less crowded coaches will help in reducing petty crimes and improving passenger security.
Implementation status in Muzaffarpur division
Station masters at Muzaffarpur Junction have started the groundwork by collecting data on current coach placements and platform lengths. This technical data is necessary to ensure that the longer 16-coach trains can be safely accommodated at all scheduled halts. The reports will be submitted to the East Central Railway for final approval. This move follows the broader vision of the Railway Ministry to upgrade short-distance travel infrastructure and provide a more comfortable journey for the common man.
