Northern Railway has officially announced the extension of 18 special train services across several high-demand routes through the end of August 2026. This move, aimed at easing travel congestion, includes key inter-state connections and specific provisions for the annual Kanwar Yatra. Additionally, the railway authority has confirmed adjustments to local schedules and addressed recent infrastructure maintenance updates to ensure passenger safety and operational efficiency.

  • 18 special trains extended until the end of August 2026.
  • Special Kanwar Mela trains and extended MEMU services operational from July 30 to August 14.
  • 52 additional daily trips on the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.
  • Daily specials from Barauni, Darbhanga, and Dhanbad receive extended runs.
  • Track maintenance leads to temporary cancellations on the Banihal-Baramulla section.

Expanded Services and Kanwar Yatra Connectivity

To manage the heavy influx of pilgrims, Northern Railway launched Kanwar Yatra special services on July 30, 2026, which will continue until August 14. Key MEMU services, specifically trains 04460 and 04459 operating between Delhi and Saharanpur, have been extended to Haridwar. To further support pilgrims, the NCRTC has increased frequency on the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, moving from a 10-minute interval to 8 minutes with 52 additional daily trips.

Long-Distance Train Extensions

Northern Railway CPRO Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay confirmed that extensions are focused on high-demand corridors. Notable extensions include the Ahmedabad-Mangaluru, Mumbai Bandra Terminus-Bhiwani, Mumbai Central-Kanpur Anwarganj, Indore-Hazrat Nizamuddin, Udhana-Ayodhya Cantt, Udhana-Malda Town, and Gandhidham-Bhagalpur routes. Furthermore, the Barauni-New Delhi (02563/02564) and Darbhanga-New Delhi (02569/02570) daily specials will run for 31 additional trips each throughout August. The Dhanbad-Shakur Basti (03639/03640) service has also been granted nine additional trips running from August 3 to September 1, 2026.

Infrastructure Updates and Consumer Awareness

While expansions are underway, the railway is also prioritizing long-term safety. Due to essential Long Welded Rail (LWR) maintenance, train services 74615, 74632, and 74628 on the Banihal-Badgam-Baramulla section remain cancelled until August 14, 2026.

In a separate legal development, the Delhi District Consumer Commission has issued a fine of ₹25,000 against Indian Railways. This ruling follows a service deficiency complaint where an RAC ticket holder in a 3 AC coach was forced to share a single blanket, highlighting the importance of maintaining passenger amenities and service standards across the network.
