Indian Railways Introduces New Tatkal Token System and Expands ATVM Usage for Passengers

Indian Railways is taking significant steps to modernize the passenger experience by introducing a structured token system for Tatkal bookings at reservation counters and expanding the reach of Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs). These initiatives, set to roll out alongside digital infrastructure upgrades in August 2026, aim to eliminate long queues and ensure a more systematic ticketing process for commuters across the network.

Key updates for rail passengers include:

• A new token-based system for offline Tatkal bookings starting August 1, 2026.

• Designated token distribution windows: 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM (AC) and 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM (non-AC).

• Categorization of tokens into ‘A’ (family) and ‘B’ (others) to streamline service.

• Continued expansion of ATVMs for quick unreserved and platform ticket issuance.

New Tatkal Token System at Reservation Counters

Starting **August 1, 2026**, West Central Railway (WCR) will implement a mandatory token system to manage the high demand for Tatkal tickets. Passengers must collect a token before their turn arrives, which helps in maintaining order at the counters. It is important to note that the **actual booking times remain unchanged at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes.**

Tokens are divided into two categories: **’A’ for families**, which requires valid photo IDs for all members, and **’B’ for individual or other bookings**. Initially, the system will issue **10 AC tokens and 15 non-AC tokens per counter**, though railway officials have confirmed that these numbers remain flexible based on daily demand. Please be aware that these tokens are **strictly non-transferable** and apply exclusively to offline counter bookings; there are no changes to the existing IRCTC online booking process.

Enhanced Convenience with ATVMs

To further reduce congestion, Indian Railways is actively promoting the use of Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) at stations. These kiosks allow passengers to purchase **unreserved tickets, platform tickets, and renew season tickets** without standing in traditional queues.

The machines support payments via **smart cards or QR codes**. Passengers using smart cards receive a **5% bonus on recharges**, while designated “Facilitators” are available at many stations to assist commuters, earning a 5% commission on the tickets they help issue. These physical infrastructure improvements, combined with the **upgraded IRCTC portal and the advanced Passenger Reservation System (PRS)**, demonstrate the national transporter’s commitment to a seamless, tech-driven travel experience for all passengers.
