The Vikramshila-Kataria new rail line project is moving forward with the goal of strengthening the rail network in Eastern Bihar. This project spans 26.23 kilometers and includes the construction of a double rail bridge over the Ganga river. Once completed, it will provide a direct rail link between Bhagalpur and the Kosi-Seemanchal region, marking the fifth rail bridge in Bihar and the first for Bhagalpur district.
What are the main highlights of this project?
The project is a major infrastructure undertaking with a significant budget and long-term planning. Indian Railways and IRCON are working together to meet the following targets as per recent official communications:
- Total estimated project cost is approximately 2549.17 crore rupees.
- Construction of the main rail bridge will cost around 1153 crore rupees.
- The bridge construction is expected to be completed by 2029.
- Full train operations on this new line are targeted for 2031.
Land acquisition and recent administrative updates
District officials and East Central Railway are coordinating to ensure the project stays on schedule. Land acquisition is currently a primary focus to allow construction to begin on the designated sites. The following table summarizes recent developments and planned milestones:
| Timeline | Event or Milestone |
|---|---|
| April 2025 | Expected start of Ganga rail bridge construction |
| January 2026 | Ministry approved 200 crore rupees for guide bund work |
| April 2026 | DM inspected sites for land acquisition in 16 villages |
| 2030-31 | Target for full project completion and operation |
This project will significantly improve connectivity and safety in the Naugachia and Kataria section. While specific crossing removals are part of such large scale alignments, the new bridge and line will modernize the entire flow of rail traffic in the region. IRCON is leading the bridge construction efforts under the supervision of the Ministry of Railways.
