Indian Railways is working on a massive Green Mission to make rail travel more eco-friendly. The goal is to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030. To achieve this, the Railway Board has now focused on conducting environmental audits across all railway zones to track progress and sustainability.

What is the target for the Green Mission?

The Indian Railways aims to reach Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030. This is part of India’s international commitment under the Paris Agreement. The mission includes several activities like planting trees, saving water, managing waste, and using renewable energy to make operations cleaner and more energy-efficient.

What are the recent directives from the Railway Board?

On May 14, 2026, the Railway Board told all zones to speed up their environment-related work. The Board expressed concern that progress was very slow. The officials have asked General Managers to ensure these projects are completed in a time-bound and effective manner.

How much funding has been allocated for these projects?

A total fund of ₹750 crore was given to zonal railways and production units in April 2025. These funds are valid until March 31, 2027. However, data from the IRPSM Portal showed that as of May 14, 2026, only about 22% of the sanctioned works had actually started.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
