The Ministry of Railways has officially greenlit a transformative multi-tracking project for the Danapur-Fatuha section, marking a significant step toward decongesting one of the busiest rail corridors in Bihar. Valued at approximately ₹976 crore, this 29-kilometer expansion is a cornerstone of a massive ₹17,000 crore initiative aimed at laying third and fourth railway lines across the 400-kilometer DDU-Danapur-Fatuha-Bakhtiyarpur-Punarakh-Kiul-Jhajha route.
Key highlights of the project include:
- Construction of 3rd and 4th lines between Danapur and Patna.
- Addition of a 3rd line between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Sahib.
- Addition of 3rd and 4th lines between Patna Sahib and Fatuha.
- Daily capacity increase of 22 passenger trains and 18 freight trains.
- Boosting operational speeds from 110 kmph to 130 kmph.
Strategic Importance for Freight and Passenger Growth
According to East Central Railway (ECR) officials, the project is being executed in phases to address the heavy congestion caused by both passenger and freight traffic. Danapur Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Abhinav Siddharth noted that these upgrades are essential to support the region’s rapid growth, significantly reducing travel times and improving overall connectivity for commuters.
This expansion is a vital part of the Delhi-Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction-Patna-Kiul-Bhagalpur-Khana-Howrah quadrupling program. As a critical energy and mineral corridor, this route is essential for transporting raw materials to industrial zones, including the upcoming 2120 MW thermal power plant in Chausa, Buxar. By enhancing infrastructure, the Indian Railways aims to increase annual freight capacity by 5.2 million tons.
Master Plan and Progress
Project planning is already well underway. Danapur Additional Divisional Railway Manager Adhar Raj confirmed that a comprehensive master plan for operational capacity has been established. The Railway Board has already sanctioned ₹7.08 crore for initial surveys, with 30% of the Final Location Survey already completed. Once finished, this infrastructure overhaul will not only streamline train movements but also provide a much-needed boost to the economic landscape of the region by ensuring smoother, faster, and more reliable rail transport.
