The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is gearing up to launch a major technological upgrade to its ticket booking portal. A beta version of the revamped website is scheduled for release on July 15, 2026, with a full-scale rollout planned shortly thereafter. This initiative follows direct feedback from students at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, who highlighted performance concerns during a session with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on July 10, 2026.

Key highlights of the upcoming IRCTC website update:

  • Beta version goes live on July 15, 2026.
  • Five-fold increase in overall booking capacity.
  • Ten-fold improvement in enquiry speed performance.
  • Streamlined interface removing unnecessary CAPTCHAs and pop-ups.
  • Mandatory Aadhaar-based OTP authentication for Tatkal bookings.
  • Restricted booking window for authorized agents to curb unfair practices.

Enhanced User Experience and Speed

The new platform, developed in collaboration with the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), focuses on speed and simplicity. By reducing the number of booking steps and eliminating visual clutter like flashing graphics, the portal aims to offer a seamless experience. A major highlight is the single-screen seat availability view across all travel classes, which will allow passengers to make quicker decisions. The system is also designed to store passenger details more efficiently, significantly reducing the time spent navigating the booking flow.

New Protocols for Tatkal Bookings

To ensure fairness during high-demand periods, the Railways is introducing stricter protocols for Tatkal tickets. Starting July 1, 2026, users are encouraged to link their Aadhaar with their IRCTC accounts, as Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for all Tatkal bookings from July 15, 2026.

Furthermore, to prevent ticket hoarding and ensure genuine passengers have a better chance of securing seats, authorized IRCTC ticketing agents will be barred from booking opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This means agents cannot book between 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes. Railway officials have also reiterated that combating automated booking bots remains a top priority to maintain a level playing field for all travelers.
