Central Railway has officially launched 24/7 Emergency Medical Rooms (EMRs) across 12 key stations in its Mumbai division to ensure immediate healthcare access for commuters and staff. This major safety initiative, which became operational on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, aims to provide life-saving support during the critical ‘golden hour’ following any medical emergency or accident. The project follows directives issued by the Bombay High Court to improve medical infrastructure within the railway network.
- 12 stations now equipped with 24/7 EMRs including Byculla, Kurla, LTT, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan, Titwala, Karjat, and Vashi.
- Comprehensive care: Facilities include doctors, paramedical staff, oxygen supply, basic life-support equipment, and portable laboratory services.
- Future expansion: EMRs for Chembur, Mankhurd, and Khopoli are coming soon, with tenders already floated for 40 additional stations.
- Emergency support: Passengers can reach out via the 139 helpline or the RailMadad app for urgent assistance.
Strengthening Railway Medical Infrastructure
The establishment of these EMRs is a significant step toward making travel safer for millions of daily suburban passengers. Each facility is fully equipped with critical medicines and ambulance services to ensure that patients can be stabilized before being transported to a hospital. By placing these rooms directly at high-footfall stations, Central Railway is drastically reducing the response time for medical emergencies, aligning with expert recommendations from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as mandated by the Supreme Court.
Commitment to Passenger Safety
Beyond the current 12 functional stations, the railway administration is aggressively pursuing the expansion of this network. The plan to add 40 more stations demonstrates a clear commitment to passenger welfare across the Mumbai division. Furthermore, all frontline railway staff have undergone specialized training in first aid to assist passengers until medical professionals arrive. Whether it is a sudden illness or an unfortunate accident, these medical rooms serve as a vital safety net for every commuter, ensuring that expert care is always within reach at the station premises.
