India is set to embark on a historic journey toward sustainable rail travel as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train. This landmark project, operating on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway, represents a major leap in India’s commitment to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and its long-term net-zero carbon emission goals.

Technical Prowess and Sustainability
This innovative 10-car hydrogen fuel cell-based trainset is a testament to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. Designed and developed by Indian Railways and the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the train utilizes a 1200 kW propulsion system. By generating electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, the only byproducts produced are water vapor and heat, ensuring a completely emission-free journey. The train is built for efficiency, featuring an approved operational speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph.
Operational Details and Infrastructure
To support this new fleet, a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind, featuring a capacity of nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen and robust multi-layer safety systems. Following the inaugural run, which will feature students from five intermediate stations, the train is scheduled to perform two daily round trips, covering a total distance of 356 km.
Passengers can look forward to affordable travel, with fares ranging between 5 and 25 rupees, keeping them comparable to existing passenger services on the route. The service will connect key points including Jind Junction, Gohana Junction, and Sonipat, with proposed halts at approximately 12 intermediate stations, such as Jind City, Gohana, and Mohana Haryana. This project not only modernizes the rail network but also sets a new global benchmark for eco-friendly public transportation.
