Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate 75 redeveloped ‘Amrit Bharat’ railway stations across India on July 17, 2026. Among the stations receiving a major facelift is the Barmer Railway Station in Rajasthan, which has been transformed under the ambitious ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ with an investment of 16.18 crore rupees. This modernization drive, managed by the North Western Railway’s Jodhpur Division, aims to elevate the travel experience for the 8,000 daily passengers who pass through this busy transit hub.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities and Infrastructure
The redevelopment project focuses on both aesthetics and operational efficiency to accommodate the 28 trains that halt at Barmer daily. Key upgrades include the construction of separate entry and exit gates, a spacious entrance hall, and a modernized circulating area with attractive landscaping. For the convenience of travellers, the station now features dedicated parking zones, distinct waiting rooms for men and women, improved retiring rooms, and dormitories.
Infrastructure improvements are particularly notable, with the addition of a new 12-meter wide foot overbridge equipped with a lift, ensuring easier access for all passengers. The station has also been upgraded with new platform shelters, modern signage, high-quality furniture, and dedicated accessible toilets for persons with disabilities, ensuring a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.
Economic Impact on the Barmer Region
Beyond passenger comfort, the station’s aesthetic and functional beautification is expected to serve as a catalyst for regional growth. Barmer has seen a steady rise in rail traffic, largely fueled by the district’s flourishing oil and gas sector, energy projects, and mineral extraction industries. By providing a modern gateway to the city, the revamped station is set to provide a significant boost to local tourism, the traditional handicraft industry, and broader trade activities. The installation of a monumental flag at the station further adds to its newfound prestige, reflecting the railway’s commitment to supporting Barmer’s growing economic footprint.
