Daily life in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, has come to a standstill following record-breaking monsoon rainfall that began on July 16, 2026. The city has faced its most severe flooding in nearly two decades, with a staggering 74.7 millimeters of rainfall recorded in just 24 hours and up to 110.2 millimeters in the Sipat area. The deluge has caused significant infrastructure damage, leading to the following developments:
* Five MEMU trains have been cancelled by South East Central Railway (SECR).
* Three additional trains have been short-terminated or diverted due to waterlogged tracks.
* District-wide school closures were enforced on July 17 to ensure public safety.
* A weather red alert remains in place for the next three days as per the IMD.
Railway Operations Impacted by Severe Waterlogging
The South East Central Railway (SECR) confirmed that the heavy downpour has severely affected the Bilaspur Railway Station, specifically impacting platforms one and two, as well as the station yard. Due to these dangerous conditions, authorities were forced to cancel the following services on July 17: 68734 Bilaspur-Korba MEMU, 68733 Korba-Bilaspur MEMU, 68719 Bilaspur-Raipur MEMU, 68746 Raipur-Bilaspur MEMU, and 68745 Bilaspur-Raipur MEMU. Passengers are advised to check the status of their trains before heading to the station, as further short-terminations or diversions may occur if the water levels do not recede.
Citywide Emergency and Rescue Efforts
The situation remains critical across the city, with residential colonies and main roads submerged under waist-deep water. A breach in the Arpa Check Dam canal has exacerbated the flooding in areas such as Deorikhurd and Manikpur. District Collector Sanjay Agrawal has directed all officials to remain on high alert, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is currently conducting rescue operations, including evacuating over 40 residents from low-lying areas like Bandhwapara using boats.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the extreme weather to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and has warned of continued heavy rainfall for the next three days. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from swollen water bodies. The administration continues to monitor the situation closely as the city grapples with power outages and widespread infrastructure damage.
