Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the newly redeveloped Jaisalmer Railway Station on July 17, 2026. This major infrastructure project, completed at an approximate cost of 140 crore rupees, marks a significant milestone under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Alongside Jaisalmer, 75 other railway stations across India were also unveiled as part of this nationwide upgrade to modernize rail infrastructure.
Key highlights of the Jaisalmer station redevelopment include:
- Construction of a new G+2 main station building spanning 8,327 square meters, featuring iconic golden-yellow stone.
- Addition of a new second entry gate for improved passenger access.
- Installation of 10 lifts and 10 escalators for seamless movement.
- Completion of a new pit line for efficient train maintenance.
- Introduction of modern passenger amenities including air-conditioned waiting rooms, a food court, and a 16-bed dormitory.
- Enhanced security features including CCTV cameras, baggage scanners, and metal detectors.
A Blend of Heritage and Modernity
According to Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer for North Western Railway, the station’s design pays homage to the local culture by utilizing the region’s famous golden-yellow stone. This aesthetic integration ensures the station remains a landmark representative of Jaisalmer’s heritage while functioning as a modern transport hub. All three platforms now feature end-to-end shelters to protect passengers from harsh weather conditions.
Enhanced Amenities and Sustainability
Beyond the architectural upgrades, the station has been equipped with facilities to cater to contemporary travel needs. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Hitesh Yadav confirmed that passenger amenities have been significantly improved, with new catering stalls, a restaurant, and a multipurpose hall now operational. Furthermore, the station incorporates green building concepts, including solar energy usage and advanced water conservation systems to ensure environmental sustainability.
The inauguration event was attended by Union Tourism & Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who noted that these upgrades are expected to provide a substantial boost to local tourism, regional trade, and employment opportunities. With the addition of disabled-friendly facilities and improved parking infrastructure, Jaisalmer Railway Station is now well-positioned to offer a world-class experience to both domestic and international travelers.
