Indian Railways has officially commenced technical trials for its first Vande Bharat-based Superfast Parcel Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). The maiden trial run took place on July 29, 2026, where the train successfully reached a top speed of 145 km/h. This project marks a significant shift in logistics, aiming to boost express parcel services, e-commerce deliveries, and cold-chain infrastructure across the country.
Key highlights of the new Vande Bharat freight train include:
- Top speed of 145 km/h achieved during inaugural testing.
- 16-coach prototype developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
- Equipped with 12 parcel coaches and 2 refrigerated (reefer) vans for temperature-sensitive goods.

Rigorous Testing Protocols
The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) is leading the comprehensive testing on the Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur section. This corridor is specifically utilized for high-speed trials. According to Saurabh Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Kota Division, the testing schedule is set to span an entire month. The protocol mandates a minimum of two round trips daily to ensure the train performs reliably under various conditions.
During these trials, the train is being evaluated at speeds of 120, 130, 140, and 145 km/h in both loaded and empty states. Technical teams are focusing on critical parameters including Emergency Braking Distance (EBD), coupler force assessments, curve performance, and overall ride quality.
