The Kashmir Valley has achieved a significant milestone in its logistics and trade capabilities as the first rice wagon dispatched from Ambala has successfully reached the newly operationalized Pampore Railway Station. This arrival marks a pivotal step in strengthening the supply chain within the region, ensuring better food security and trade efficiency. Key highlights of this development include:
• The Pampore Goods Shed was officially operationalized by Northern Railway’s Jammu Division on July 15, 2026.
• This is the second dedicated goods shed in the Kashmir Valley, joining the existing facility in Anantnag.
• The facility handles a wide range of commodities, excluding petroleum, oil, lubricants (POL), and coal.
• The shed operates on a daily schedule from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM to streamline freight movement.
Expanding Freight Connectivity in the Valley
This initiative follows the successful arrival of the inaugural freight rake at the station on July 17, 2026, which transported cement from Bharatgarh and Kiratpur Sahib in the Ambala Division. According to Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, the new goods shed is set to be a game-changer for the local economy. By reducing dependency on distant loading points, the facility will significantly lower transportation costs, providing much-needed relief to local fruit growers, farmers, and traders who rely on timely distribution.
A Boost for Regional Growth
Beyond the immediate benefits of goods transportation, the operationalization of the Pampore Goods Shed is part of a larger strategic vision to integrate the Kashmir Valley into the national freight network. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has frequently highlighted that reliable, year-round rail connectivity is essential for the region, as it remains unaffected by the adverse weather conditions that often disrupt road transport.
Furthermore, the station is expected to act as a catalyst for local job creation. The increase in loading, unloading, and last-mile transportation activities is anticipated to stimulate employment opportunities for the local workforce. As Indian Railways continues to expand its footprint in the valley, this infrastructure upgrade stands as a testament to the commitment of providing seamless connectivity to the people of Kashmir, fostering an environment where trade and industry can flourish independently of seasonal challenges.
