Indian Railways is taking decisive action to secure its digital ticketing ecosystem by rolling out advanced verification protocols and dynamic technology. These updates are designed to eliminate the circulation of counterfeit tickets and protect passengers from fraudulent activities that have previously exploited static QR code systems. Key developments include:
- Transitioning to dynamic, refreshing QR codes to replace static codes.
- Launching the RailOne ‘super app’ to centralize and secure unreserved ticketing.
- Mandating live in-app ticket displays with photo ID verification for all passengers.
- Equipping TTEs with specialized scanning apps for real-time authentication.
Addressing Vulnerabilities in Digital Ticketing
Following reports of widespread misuse, particularly within Mumbai’s suburban network, Central and Western Railways moved to suspend QR code-based bookings via the UTSonmobile app by September 5, 2025. The system previously struggled with loopholes that allowed commuters to generate fake tickets. To counter this, railway officials are now implementing dynamic QR codes that refresh periodically, making it impossible for fraudsters to reuse or replicate digital ticket assets.
The Shift to the RailOne Super App
In a major technological overhaul, Indian Railways transitioned to the RailOne super app on March 1, 2026. This platform serves as the new hub for unreserved ticketing. A significant policy change followed on July 15, 2026, requiring all passengers to present a valid photo ID alongside their ticket. Under these new rules, screenshots and forwarded images of tickets are strictly prohibited; passengers must display the live, active ticket directly within the official application to be considered valid travelers.
Combating AI-Enabled Fraud
Railway authorities have recognized the rising threat of AI-enabled fake tickets, a trend that became prominent by December 2025. To stay ahead of these increasingly sophisticated scams, the national transporter has empowered its frontline staff. As of February 18, 2025, Western Railway has already deployed internal verification apps for Ticket Examiners (TTEs). These tools allow staff to scan QR codes instantly and confirm the authenticity of a document against the central database, ensuring that only genuine commuters occupy railway premises. These measures mark a significant step forward in modernizing the passenger experience and maintaining the integrity of Indian Railways’ digital infrastructure.
