Passengers arriving at Una Railway Station in Himachal Pradesh may soon benefit from a new, eco-friendly, and affordable transit option. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has proposed launching a dedicated electric bus service to connect the railway station directly to the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). This initiative, which surfaced on July 31, 2026, aims to bridge a critical connectivity gap for travelers reaching the town by rail.
Key highlights of the proposed initiative include:
• A significantly reduced travel cost of just 20 rupees per passenger.
• An end to the current reliance on private taxis and autos, which typically charge between 200 and 400 rupees for the short three-kilometer commute.
• A formal request by HRTC Una depot to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Ambala Division for space within the station premises to establish bus bays and parking.
• A commitment from HRTC to maintain strict adherence to railway safety, cleanliness, and operational standards.
Connecting the Last Mile
Currently, travelers arriving at Una face limited public transport options, often leaving them at the mercy of high-priced private transport for the short distance to the ISBT. SDM Una, Abhishek Mittal, has confirmed that the administration is actively coordinating with the railway authorities to finalize the logistics. The proposal is designed to ensure that the integration of bus services does not disrupt station operations while providing maximum convenience to commuters.
Green Transport Push in Himachal
This project aligns with the Himachal Pradesh government’s aggressive move toward sustainable public transport. On July 30, 2026, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, along with Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri and Health Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil, flagged off 297 new electric buses for the HRTC fleet. The state has set an ambitious target to acquire 1,000 additional electric buses this year, with future plans to explore hydrogen-powered transit.
Una and Hamirpur depots have been prioritized in this distribution, with each receiving an allocation of 35 new e-buses. With 30 buses already delivered to Una and five more currently undergoing final inspections, the infrastructure is rapidly falling into place. Once the railway administration grants the necessary permissions for station access, this service is expected to provide a seamless and economical travel experience for both residents and tourists.
