Indian Railways is transforming the passenger dining experience by mandating digital payment options for all onboard catering services. This initiative aims to eliminate the common issue of overcharging while ensuring complete transparency through an automated e-billing system. Passengers can now enjoy seamless transactions across the network using modern payment methods.
Key highlights of the digital catering upgrade include:
• Mandatory use of POS machines, UPI, and QR codes for all onboard food transactions.
• Implementation of an e-billing system to ensure every passenger receives a printed receipt.
• Integration of the IRCTC E-Pantry service, allowing for pre-booked meals with fully digital payments.
• Nationwide coverage across 8,878 static catering units and hundreds of trains.
Enhancing Transparency and Accountability
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this cashless drive on August 3, 2026. By equipping pantry staff with handheld Point of Sale (POS) machines, the Railways is effectively curbing the practice of vendors charging passengers more than the printed menu price. This policy follows a long-term strategy that began with the Railway Board’s directive on August 1, 2022, which officially made cashless payments mandatory at all railway stations. Vendors failing to comply with these digital payment requirements now face strict penalties, ensuring that the service remains passenger-friendly and accountable.
Expansion of Digital Infrastructure
The transition to a cashless environment has seen rapid progress across the network. By February 10, 2026, the IRCTC successfully integrated its E-Pantry service, streamlining how food is ordered and paid for during travel. Historical data highlights the scale of this project; as of September 2022, the Railways had already deployed 3,081 POS machines across 596 trains and upgraded 4,316 static catering units. Today, this infrastructure has expanded significantly, covering nearly 9,000 static units.
For the modern Indian rail traveler, this means that whether you are purchasing a quick snack at a station or ordering a meal on a long-distance train, you can now pay with confidence using your preferred UPI app or card. The move not only simplifies the payment process but also aligns Indian Railways with the broader national goal of a digital, transparent economy.
