Elephant Dies After Being Struck by Bhubaneswar-Dhanbad Garib Rath Express Near Sagara Station in Chakradharpur

A female elephant was killed by a train in Chakradharpur, causing major disruptions to train services for several hours.



A tragic incident occurred early Thursday morning in Chakradharpur when a female elephant was hit by the Bhubaneswar-Dhanbad Garib Rath Express. This accident took place near the Sagara station on the Rourkela-Jharsuguda rail line.

The elephant was found injured on the railway track, and it took nearly nine hours to remove her from the site. After the accident, train services on both lines of the Howrah-Mumbai main route were halted, leading to significant delays.


Passengers faced issues as several trains were stopped or delayed for hours. The Bhubaneswar-Dhanbad Garib Rath Express was held up for about an hour before being moved with a different engine to continue its journey.

Railway and forest department teams quickly responded to the scene. A crane was brought in to lift the injured elephant, but unfortunately, she passed away before reaching the treatment facility in Bhubaneswar.


The forest department has formed a committee to investigate the incident. They will look into whether proper notifications were given regarding the elephant’s presence near the tracks and what actions were taken by the railway authorities.
