Indian Railways has officially approved the construction of a new four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section under the Western Railway zone. This significant infrastructure project, announced on August 12, 2026, comes with an estimated cost of ₹153 crore and is designed to tackle persistent traffic congestion while enhancing safety for commuters in Gujarat.

Key highlights of the project include:

  • Project cost sanctioned at ₹153 crore.
  • Location: Level Crossing No. 305 on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section.
  • Structure: 106-meter railway bridge span consisting of two 53-meter composite girders.
  • Additional infrastructure: 150-meter viaduct and a 595-meter railway approach.
  • Objective: Eliminating level crossing delays and improving urban traffic flow.

Technical Specifications and Project Scope

The new ROB is being constructed at Level Crossing No. 305, a location characterized by high urban density. Because of the surrounding infrastructure, engineers have planned for longer approaches and a more robust design to accommodate the four-lane requirement. The structural design features a 106-meter railway portion, supported by two composite girders, complemented by a substantial 150-meter viaduct and a 595-meter approach road to ensure seamless connectivity for local traffic.

This project falls under the Western Railway’s broader umbrella program. This ongoing initiative is specifically focused on the systematic elimination of level crossings, the construction of new Road Over/Under Bridges (ROBs/RUBs), and necessary drainage improvements to modernize rail infrastructure across the region.

Impact on Commuter Safety and Traffic

For residents and daily travelers in the area, the completion of this ROB will mark a major upgrade. Currently, the presence of the level crossing causes frequent traffic bottlenecks. By replacing this with a grade-separated structure, the Ministry of Railways aims to ensure continuous vehicle movement, which will drastically reduce waiting times and fuel wastage.

Beyond just speed, the primary motivation for this project is safety. Indian Railways remains committed to the policy of eliminating level crossings to prevent accidents and create a more efficient transport network. Once operational, the bridge will serve as a vital link, significantly easing the burden on local roads and providing a safer, more reliable transit experience for thousands of daily commuters in Ahmedabad.
