The Ministry of Railways is making significant progress at the Sabarmati Rolling Stock Depot, a cornerstone facility designed to support the operational needs of India’s first high-speed rail corridor. This state-of-the-art hub will serve as the primary maintenance base for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, ensuring that the fleet remains in peak condition for reliable service. Key highlights of the project include:
• Specialized maintenance capabilities for 16-car high-speed trainsets, including bogie repair and wheel re-profiling.
• Initial capacity of four inspection lines and 10 stabling lines, with a roadmap to reach 29 stabling lines.
• A strong focus on sustainability with groundwater recharge systems and 14 megawatts of solar power capacity.
• Integration into a wider network of three major depots, including those in Surat and Thane.
• Scheduled launch of the first segment between Surat and Vapi by August 2027.
Advanced Maintenance for Shinkansen Technology
The Sabarmati depot is being constructed using advanced Japanese Shinkansen technology under the supervision of the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). It is specifically engineered to handle the rigorous maintenance requirements of high-speed trainsets. The facility features dedicated workshops for car body maintenance and precise wheel re-profiling, which are essential for maintaining safety and comfort at high operational speeds. As the MAHSR corridor expands, the depot is designed for scalability, with long-term plans to double its inspection lines to eight, ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with increasing traffic demands.
Sustainable Infrastructure and Future Timelines
Beyond its technical utility, the depot sets a benchmark for green railway infrastructure. The site incorporates four reservoirs for groundwater recharge and has been built to support 14 megawatts of solar power generation, aligning with Indian Railways’ broader goals of reducing its carbon footprint.
This facility is one of three critical depots supporting the 508-km corridor. While the first segment between Surat and Vapi is targeted for completion by August 2027, the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is expected to be fully operational by 2029. By establishing such robust maintenance hubs well in advance, the Indian Railways is ensuring that the transition to high-speed travel is both seamless and sustainable for future passengers.
