As the nation gears up for Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, Northern Railway and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have announced a series of operational adjustments to ensure passenger safety and security. These measures will remain in effect from August 12 to August 16, 2026, and will impact daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.

Key updates for passengers include:

  • Train movement between Delhi Junction and Delhi Shahdara is suspended on August 15 from 6:45 AM to 9:00 AM.
  • Multiple DMU and MEMU services, including the Delhi Junction-Saharanpur and Shamli-Delhi routes, are cancelled.
  • Long-distance and local express trains will face diversions or short-termination at New Delhi and Delhi Shahdara.
  • Commercial parcel booking and loading are suspended at New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and two other major stations until midnight on August 15.
  • Delhi Metro services will begin early at 4:00 AM on August 15.
  • Parking facilities at all metro stations will remain closed from 6:00 AM on August 14 until 2:00 PM on August 15.

Railway Operational Adjustments

Due to the high-security zone near the Red Fort, Northern Railway is strictly regulating train movements. Passengers travelling on the Delhi-Saharanpur and Delhi-Shamli corridors should verify their train status before heading to the station, as several services have been cancelled or diverted. Trains that are not cancelled may be short-terminated at alternative stations to avoid the restricted area. Furthermore, the suspension of commercial parcel activities at five major hubs is a precautionary measure to maintain station security.

Delhi Metro and Security Protocols

To accommodate the public, the Delhi Metro will operate on an early schedule on Independence Day, with trains starting at 4:00 AM. Between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, trains will operate at 15-to-30-minute intervals before shifting to the regular Sunday/Holiday schedule.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have intensified screening operations across the capital. With security protocols heightened, passengers are strongly advised to reach stations well in advance of their scheduled departure times. Travellers should also note that parking facilities at all Delhi Metro stations will remain unavailable for a 32-hour window starting from 6:00 AM on August 14. We recommend planning your commute accordingly to avoid any last-minute inconvenience during this period of national importance.
