Indian Railways has officially commenced a transformative infrastructure expansion project within the vital ‘Chicken Neck’ corridor to significantly improve connectivity to India’s North Eastern states. This strategic move focuses on both capacity augmentation and long-term security, ensuring that the supply chain and passenger movement remain resilient. Key highlights of this expansion include:
- Approval for a fourth railway line between Malda and New Jalpaiguri (NJP).
- A 29-kilometer underground rail project linking Tinmail Ghat and Bagdogra.
- The underground tunnel is specifically engineered to protect against security threats, including drone and missile attacks.
- Redevelopment of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with an investment of ₹334 crore.
Modernizing Connectivity and Security
The decision to construct an underground rail link between Tinmail Ghat and Bagdogra marks a milestone in railway engineering. By moving critical logistics underground, the Indian Railways is creating a robust, secure corridor that is shielded from external threats, ensuring uninterrupted operations in this geopolitically sensitive region. The addition of a fourth line between Malda and New Jalpaiguri will further decongest the route, allowing for a higher frequency of both freight and passenger trains.
NJP Station Transformation
New Jalpaiguri is set to become a world-class transit hub. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the station is undergoing a massive overhaul, with completion expected by early 2027. Passengers can look forward to a modern air concourse, improved parking facilities, the installation of escalators and elevators, and spacious, dedicated food courts.
Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has personally reviewed the progress of these works. This project is part of a larger vision for the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which has already achieved 100% electrification of its network. Looking ahead, the railway administration is also planning to expand the premium Vande Bharat Express services to reach Tinsukia and Agartala, further integrating the North East with the rest of the country.
