The transformation of Jalandhar City railway station has officially moved from planning to execution. As part of the prestigious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the project aims to overhaul the station into a modern transit hub, ensuring a world-class travel experience for passengers. The construction firm has already set up its site office in the former railway quarters, marking the formal commencement of the project.
Key highlights of the Jalandhar City station upgrade include:
- An estimated project cost of ₹195.08 crore.
- Installation of eight elevators and six escalators for improved passenger mobility.
- Development of a spacious concourse and modern air-conditioned waiting lounges.
- Implementation of state-of-the-art luggage scanning systems for enhanced security.
- Construction of a new entry gate from the Kazi Mandi side to improve accessibility.
Modernizing Infrastructure and Access
This redevelopment is modeled after the successful modernization of Jalandhar Cantt station. A significant focus of the design is to improve connectivity for residents in surrounding areas such as Kishanpura, Chandan Nagar, and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar. The station building itself is set for a major architectural upgrade, with a new structure measuring 90 meters by 20 meters planned to replace the existing facility.
While the long-term benefits are substantial, commuters should prepare for some short-term adjustments. Authorities have advised that temporary traffic disruptions are expected near the station entrance, with traffic being diverted through the Post Office area to facilitate construction work.
Strategic Challenges and Future Outlook
Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, has emphasized that this project is part of a broader ₹30,000 crore investment aimed at revitalizing Punjab’s railway infrastructure. However, the project faces certain logistical hurdles, most notably the relocation of the goods shed. Currently, officials have identified Kartarpur as the most viable location for this facility, which is a critical step in streamlining the station’s operations.
As the project progresses in multiple phases, the Indian Railways remains committed to balancing the construction timeline with the daily needs of passengers. This modernization is expected to significantly boost the station’s capacity and comfort levels, positioning Jalandhar City as a key node in the regional rail network.
