Central Railway has officially upgraded 22 additional suburban local train services from 12-car to 15-car rakes, effective August 15, 2026. This strategic expansion marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s rail infrastructure, bringing the total count of 15-car suburban services on the network to 54. This upgrade effectively increases passenger capacity by 25% per train, providing much-needed relief to the daily commute. While individual train capacities have increased, the total number of daily suburban services across the network remains steady at 1,820.

  • 22 additional services upgraded from 12-car to 15-car rakes
  • Total 15-car services on the network now stand at 54
  • 25% increase in passenger carrying capacity per train
  • Focus areas: CSMT-Karjat/Khopoli corridor
  • Peak hour relief: 11 services scheduled during morning and evening rush hours

Focus on Commuter Relief

The upgrades are primarily focused on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Karjat/Khopoli corridor. This move offers major relief to commuters traveling from Ambarnath, Badlapur, Karjat, and Khopoli, who often face heavy crowding during peak hours. To accommodate these longer 15-car rakes, the railway has implemented several operational changes, including the conversion of specific slow services to fast services and the rescheduling of trains departing from Dadar and Parel.

Operational Changes and Maintenance

As part of this transition, several route modifications have been introduced. For instance, the Khopoli-Parel local has been converted to a Dadar-bound service, and specific CSMT departures have been extended. Passengers should note that while most services are running as per the new schedule, the DA7 Dadar-Ambarnath 15-car service will remain cancelled every Saturday to facilitate mandatory maintenance work. Dr. Swapnil Nila, CPRO of Central Railway, confirmed that these improvements are designed to enhance the daily transit experience for thousands of suburban rail users, ensuring a more comfortable journey for those traveling on the busy Central line.
